Kia ora koutou, This is my first time writing for the Kaicycle newsletter, so a quick introduction feels in order. I’m Marty, and I currently serve as Board Chair. My role is to support our governance group to keep Kaicycle strong, sustainable, and moving in the right direction for the long term. More importantly, I’m here to support the community who make Kaicycle what it is — our staff, volunteers, supporters, and whanau. I see this role as working alongside you all to help Kaicycle reach its full potential, not just as an organisation, but as a living, growing part of our community. For over 10 years, Kaicycle has been part of Wellington’s story — turning food scraps into rich soil, and that soil into nourishing kai for the community. What started in an underused park has grown into something special: a place where waste becomes a resource, where people reconnect with food, and where community quietly thrives. Every year, thousands of tonnes of organic waste are kept out of landfill. Fresh produce is grown and shared with those who need it most. And a simple idea — that local communities can care for their own food systems — is brought to life. Where We Are Now: Like many community organisations, we’re feeling the pressure. Funding is becoming less certain, while the need for what we do continues to grow. We’ve reached a point where we need support to keep things steady and continue building toward a more sustainable future. We’re confident in where we’re heading. We know this model works. We just need a little help to keep it moving forward. Why It Matters: Kaicycle is more than compost and vegetables. It’s: Less waste going to landfill More fresh, local food in the community A shared space where people connect, learn, and contribute A glimpse of what resilient neighbourhoods can look like
