Kia ora koutou,

Climate change and extreme weather events are showing up around Aotearoa - we’re sending aroha and solidarity to you or any friends and whānau who have been affected. We’re feeling privileged here in Te Whanganui-a-Tara to be sheltered from some of the more extreme weather, and also to be able to take concrete action. Kaicycle is, at heart, a climate justice kaupapa - we’re making soil instead of landfill by diverting 1000s of kilograms of food scraps, and we’re growing, sharing and selling local organically grown veggies, all while regenerating the whenua that we stand on.

If you’re feeling a little lost in all this climate chaos, why not come down to the māra, get your hands in the soil and plant a seed for the future - and connect with your community here. It can make things feel a little less chaotic. We have some great opportunities to grow and connect in this newsletter.

Community Open Days and Workshops!

Once a month on a Rāhoroi / Saturday, we run a community working bee and koha workshop. 

7th Pēpuere / February 

• 9.30am-12pm - Working bee - do some mahi in the garden - could be weeding, planting, sowing seeds, sifting compost or more, depending on what the māra needs at that time! Register and find out more here.

• 12.30pm-1pm - BYO picnic lunch to eat or some kai to share! 

• 1pm-1.30pm - Farm tour - If you haven't been to our urban farm before, this is a great opportunity to find out what we're all about and how our farm and community composting works.

• 1.30pm-3pm - Koha workshop - as it’s Waitangi weekend, we’re focusing on Kaicycle’s ongoing experience on the waka of becoming Hua Parakore certified - a Māori organic growing kaupapa. As a non-Māori organisation, it’s important to us to respect Papatūānuku in this way. Find out more and how to register here. 

7th Maehe / March

On 7th Maehe / March, we’ll be doing an extra special Local Food Week edition of our Community Open Day, in collaboration with Seeds to Feeds - check out the plan for the day and sign up here!

MAHI AROHA | VOLUNTEER

During the summer months we’re continuing with our evening volunteer sessions on Tuesday, 5-7pm - these won’t be happening after the clocks go back in April, so if you work a day job but still want to get into the māra, come along to one of these sessions while you have the chance! MAHI WAIRĀKAU | COMPOSTING

Need compost for your garden?

You can buy our compost online here, or if you’re connected to a community project, you can request some for free. It’s high quality and full of goodness.

Food scraps going manky in the office bin?

During these (sometimes) hot days, are you getting flies around the bins in the office cos there are food scraps in there? You could be getting your compostables picked up by our Kaicyclist team! Check out the options here and sign up - get the flies to buzz off.

We’re selling organic cotton teatowels with an awesome Kaicycle logo on them, raising funds for our essential mahi. Order yours here - support our mahi and dry the dishes in style. 

Newtown Community Centre needs a new volunteer soup chef

Kaicycle provides fresh veggies to Te Whare Hapori o ngā Puna Waiora / Newtown Community Centre every week, which get used for their community lunch, Free Soup Fridays. They’re after a new chef to cook up those delish veggies (along with contributions from Kaibosh and others!!) to make yum soups and salads for the whole community. Silverbeet’s story
