We offer a wide range of 1.5 hour gardening and sustainability workshops as listed below. These workshops can be delivered at our Urban Farm at 5 Hospital Road, Newtown, or we can come to you (depending on the workshop). If the workshop you want is not listed here, please reach out to us as we may be able to offer a bespoke workshop. The cost for contracting us to run a workshop for your group starts at $250. Soil Health 101

Join us on a journey into soil - it’s formation, the diverse life within it, and how to look after and nurture this precious life-giving resource. Soil is the interface between life and death for us as humans, and a resource that we are currently loosing at an alarming rate as a result of conventional agricultural practices.

In this workshop we will talk about what makes up soil, and the markers of soil health. We’ll discuss the implications of soil health on plant health, food quality, and climate change and how to take an ecosystems approach when it comes to soil. We’ll also cover and practice some regenerative gardening strategies you can employ to regenerate and protect your soil and the life within it!

Growing Kai From Seed

Propagating plants from seed is an excellent way to grow vegetables cheaply, is extremely satisfying, and means you can grow seedlings that are acclimated to your garden’s micro climate. This practical workshop covers everything you need to know to grow great seedlings, from seed anatomy, which seeds to buy, when your plants are ready to go out into the big wide world, and everything in between.

Reframing Weeds

In this workshop we’re going to be reframing weeds: looking at all the ways that they can be beneficial to us. From supporting soil health, acting as a signal to help us understand our soil, and providing edible and nutritious leaves and flowers.

We’ll discuss the garden ecosystem, the benefits that so called ‘weeds’ can have and techniques for controlling weeds outside of the classic weeding. We’ll also look at some common edible weeds found in most gardens and how you can safely forage weeds to spruce up your salad or make a delicious foraged tea!

Composting 101

Learn how to take climate action with your food scraps, make great compost, and keep the rodents away! Composting done responsibly creates a great resource for your garden while reducing your household waste, carbon emissions, and protecting native species. We’ll kōrero different types of composting and what might suit, what can and can’t go in, and do a bit of compost troubleshooting. This workshop will answer your composting questions, including what composting set up would be best for you, and how to make sure you’re not attracting rats. Suitable for beginner and experienced composters alike.

Growing Micro-greens

Micro-greens are a great and nutritious addition to a salad or used as a garnish to make even the simplest meal fancy. The best thing about them is that you can grow them inside - apartment dwellers rejoice! In this workshop we’ll cover everything you need to know to get started growing your own micro-greens at home. You’ll get to sow a tray at the workshop which you can take home with you.

Regenerative Gardening 101

Regenerative farming aims to nourish and replenish the land naturally. We have an eco-system view of gardening, prioritising soil health for planetary health, for plant and people health. In this introductory workshop we’ll explore some regenerative practices we follow at Kaicycle and how you could implement these on the whenua you garden and kaitiaki. We’ll kōrero about how local regenerative growing is part of climate-change mitigation, adaptation and resilience.

Make Your Own Organic Fertilisers

What is a fertiliser? How do organic fertilisers differ from those used in conventional practices? Why are synthetic fertlisers so destructive to our ecosystems? What are environmentally friendly alternatives? If these are questions you’ve asked this workshop is definitely for you. In this practical workshop we’ll look at how we can keep our systems local and circular and use the resources on hand to give our gardens everything they need. We’ll practice making some of these fertilisers and tonics and you can take some away with you to try out on your own garden! BYO Jar/bottle.
