Kaicycle Community Open Day Mei (May)

This event is hosted as part of Climate Festival Pōneke 2026.

Join us at Kaicycle Urban Farm to learn how to regenerate the whenua and take climate action in your backyard!

This will be a hands-on working bee where you'll have the chance to get your hands in the dirt and take some tangible climate action, while learning some great regenerative growing skills on the way.

Tasks will depend on what needs doing on the day, but these might include weeding, planting out, building compost piles, and planting seeds. Our hard mahi will be followed by a shared lunch so please bring some kai to share if you can! This working bee will be followed by a koha composting workshop at 1.30pm.

Come along for as much or as little of the day as you would like! Here’s the plan for the day:

9:30am - 12.30pm COMMUNITY WORKING BEE - Registrations required.
Growing local kai in ways that are good for the whenua is climate action. Come and get your hands in the māra, learn some skills, and meet some cool people. Please register at www.kaicycle.org.nz/volunteer

Join us for a shared lunch and a chilled hang out in the māra. Please bring some kai to share if you can.

Climate-Friendly Composting - KOHA Workshop

Climate-Friendly Composting - KOHA Workshop

Registrations essential. Please register by emailing community@kaicycle.org.nz

This event is hosted as part of Climate Festival Pōneke 2026 & Composting Awareness Week.

It’s well known that composting is a lot better than throwing food scraps in landfill - reducing greenhouse gas emissions, returning nutrients to the soil, improving soil health and microbiology, sequestering carbon in the soil, and growing more kai. But... composting still produces greenhouse gas emissions. The recipe and the composting method used can hugely affect the amount of greenhouse gases emitted during the decomposition of organic materials, and the quality and biological composition of the resulting compost can have climate implications too.

Join us at Kaicycle Urban Farm to learn about a range of composting methods and the climate impact they have, and find out what practical techniques you can use to minimise emissions from composting at home and make the most healthy compost possible.

1:00PM - FARM TOUR
If you haven't been to our urban farm before, this is a great opportunity to find out what we're all about and how our farm and community composting works, before the workshop starts.

1:30-3PM - CLIMATE FRIENDLY COMPOSTING WORKSHOP

Register by emailing community@kaicycle.org.nz

Admission Fee: Koha

Ages: All, under 16s accompanied by an adult

Please wear suitable outdoor clothing.

Grow Your Own Mulch Workshop

Mulch makes a huge difference to soil and plant health. It protects the soil surface from weeds, erosion and moisture loss while also feeding worms and microbial life. Instead of buying pea straw or wood chip, there are many plants we can grow to use as mulch - from cannas and lupin to kawakawa and buckwheat. At Kaicycle we are planting a large mulch/flower/pollinator border to support our veggies. Come and learn how to apply this in your own gardens.

This is a hands-on workshop, learning through doing, so please wear garden-suitable footwear and clothing.

Planting for Beneficial Insects and Pest Control Workshop

It's not all about the veges. A thriving garden is a balanced ecosystem including flowers, herbs and perennials which provide food and habitat for beneficial insects who pollinate crops and/or manage pest insects. We all probably know bees and ladybirds, but who can recognise a lacewing or ichneumon wasp? Get an insect's-eye view of your garden and you'll never spray again!

Seed saving is an ancient practice and an essential tool in creating a circular and resilient food system and enabling kai sovereignty. It also allows us to select for seed that will thrive in our micro-climates, strengthening crops year by year. We'll wānanga about the importance of saving seed, understanding the whakapapa of seeds and plant reproduction, and what you need to know to start saving seed yourself. We'll put our learnings into practice at the farm, saving and processing seed from our summer crops. We will have an area for swapping seed, so please bring along any saved seed you would like to swap.

Registrations required - email community@kaicycle.org.nz to sign up

This is a koha workshop and we ask you to pay what you can afford. If that’s a gold coin that is completely fine! If you can afford more we really appreciate it - we are a charity and rely on donations to be able to carry out our mahi. Koha can be paid in cash or by bank transfer.

Te Reo Māori in the māra: Kōrero at Kaicycle

It's Te Wiki o te Reo Māori!

For this volunteer session, come along and help out on the māra and give te reo Māori a go.

We'll have some areas in the māra / garden where we speak te reo Māori only, and others where English is allowed - so, whatever your reo Māori level, come along to kōrero, learn some useful phrases in the māra and share a kapu tī and keke (cup of tea and cake).

We may even play Tākaro taiao edition (if it's not too windy)!

The kaimahi / workers at Kaicycle are learning too, so there's no pressure, we'll all be muddling through! Karawhiua - give it a go!

Please note, we have bees on site.
